Careers Education and Education for Work

Careers Education

Careers Scotland is involved with parents and pupils at various stages from S2 onwards.

A Careers Adviser attends Parents' Evenings for S2, S4, S5/S6 and is available for consultation.

Once a week, at key stages in the year, the Careers Adviser holds a lunchtime 'look-in' session. Pupils from any year are welcome to come along for careers information.

Careers Service staff will be involved with any relevant initiatives for S2 pupils throughout the year
e.g. subject choice. All S2 pupils are also given an introduction to the Careers Library by the Careers Adviser.

Careers Advisers take part in presentations on options available to pupils in S4/5/6 e.g. jobs, training, further and higher education and staying on at school. Interviews will take place as requested: senior pupils make self-referrals when needed.

A Higher Education Convention is held in September in the Galashiels Campus of Heriot Watt University. There is an opportunity for parents to attend this event.

Work Experience

It is hoped that every pupil in S4 will have the opportunity of Work Experience lasting one week. The aim of this scheme is to help prepare pupils for the transition from School to Employment by giving them an opportunity to take part in the work of a firm. Pupils are able to experience a continuous spell in a working atmosphere and can gain first hand knowledge of what any particular job entails. Work Experience can therefore assist in personal development, as well as being an aid in the choice of a suitable career.

University/College Applications/References

When students are ready to apply for a place at University or College, they see a member of the Senior Management Team (or Guidance Teacher) to get advice on completing their application. When the form has been completed the student meets with a member of the Management Team to discuss the completion of the reference. Teachers are consulted on current courses and the student's reports over recent years are checked. (All students intending to leave school receive an "applications pack" giving information on the help available).
