Parents and Guardians have a very important part to play in the
education of their children.
They often ask what they can do to help with the progress of their
children at school.
Here are some examples of practical things which can be done :-
a) Try to keep in touch with the content of courses by asking
what is being taught each day and by looking at schoolwork.
b) Have a look at the homework diary which will show dates of
tests etc. as well as homework.
c) Let the Guidance Teacher know if your child seems worried about
any aspect of his/her schooling.
d) Let the Guidance Teacher or a senior member of staff know if
your child's schoolwork is likely to be affected by any problems.
e) Provide a suitable place and time for your child to work at
home.
f) Encourage your child to find interest in school work and to
try hard.
g) If you have any questions about courses/homework etc, please
ask. Simply telephone or write a note to the school.
As pupils progress through school, the amount of effort they put
into their work becomes increasingly "their own responsibility".
Teachers will insist on work being done and will demand a certain
standard, but the benefit to the pupil will depend very much on
the effort he or she is willing to make. Guidance Teachers receive
reports of any concerns from every subject teacher and they contact
parents when appropriate.
Parents are consulted at the following times :-
i) Before pupils are allowed to take part in excursions.
ii) Before pupils’ choice of courses for S3, S5 or S6
are confirmed.
iii) Before a pupil is allowed to change course.
iv) Before pupils are granted study leave (at S4, 5, 6).
Pupils in S5 and S6 are young adults, most of whom could have
left school. However, they are in a sense "sponsored" by
parents who are consulted on courses followed, and are informed
when there are concerns about progress/attendance etc.
Parents are encouraged to contact the
school to let us know of their concerns about any aspect of their
child's schooling or about
the school. Please do not feel you are "bothering the school".
If you have any concerns or questions it is important to let us
know. You are helping the school when you do so.
