Pastoral Support
‘
First-Line Guidance’ is provided by the Register Teacher
who sees his/her register class for 10 minutes each morning. The
Register Teacher deals with absences, and notes any complaints
or problems from pupils. These may be passed on to the Guidance
Teacher.
The present guidance structure allows pupils to keep the same
Guidance Teacher from S1 to S6 and brothers and sisters have the
same Guidance Teacher. It is important that parents communicate
with the Guidance Teacher as soon as possible if there are any
problems or questions. The confidentiality of any communication
will be honoured.
Pastoral care is a very high priority with the Guidance team.
Pupils are interviewed as often as is practicable and as soon as
possible in ‘crisis situations’. The Guidance team
also closely monitor pupils’ academic progress and keep a
close watch on attendance. Guidance Teachers are available to be
contacted by pupils.
Bullying
When a pupil's time at school is being made difficult by others,
it is very serious. When this is brought to the attention of member
of staff it is given the highest priority.
Usually, in the first instance, Guidance Teachers will see pupils
involved and do their best to help resolve the problems. The offenders
are left in no doubt that the bullying must stop. If the offence
is repeated, the problem is referred to Senior Management and parents
are informed. If the bullying continues, the most serious sanctions
are applied. Bullying can be stopped. If it happens to you (or
anyone you know) let a teacher know.
Primary/Secondary Liaison
A great deal of effort goes into making the transition from primary
to secondary school as smooth as possible.
Guidance Teachers visit the primary schools in the summer term
to meet with P7 pupils and to answer their questions. Learning
Support staff also visit primary teachers on a weekly, school-by-school
basis to discuss the needs of pupils who are likely to require
help with learning.
The P7 pupils spend two days in the High School in June and the
parents of P7 pupils visit the school during an evening in June.
